Building a design team (almost) from scratch

Context

After gaining a scholarship to the Apple Developer Academy program, I was invited to serve as a Junior Mentor for the next cohort of students. Each class had 25 students, 2 other design Jr. Mentors, and one Design professor from PUCPR, aside from IT professors as well.

The challenge

The ADA program is focused in teaching students about design and software development for the Apple ecosystem. Although there is a sequence of topics to be taught, the entire learning journey is defined by each student. With that in mind, mentors needed to adapt to each student's context, giving them support to help them grow in both areas (design and programming).

The mission

For that to be possible, the mentors needed to be immersed in the Apple Developer Academy educational approach (CBL), be present with the students, and adapt our way of teaching for each individual or group during projects. It was essential to stay very perceptive of needs and attentive when they asked for help. At the same time, the mentors and the program's coordinator were always trying to improve teaching methods, propose new dynamics for the students, and promote a rich environment to enhance creativity, helping them to reach their true potential.

Apple encourages us to be bold and try new things to make real positive impact, not only in our Academy, but possibly others as well. We were always seeking innovation and new solutions to help improve the Apple Developer Academy experience.
